The Tile Project

Nothing in a 100 year old home is easy

ok, so we are only a few months away from having a little person becoming a permanent resident here in this room so some "conversion" work has begun. for starters, this lovely green coal burning fireplace has got to go. the plan is to remove all the tile and put something a little less "AHHHH!" in it's place.

destruct begins: 02.26.03 @ 8:00 pm
the first incision

few things are as useful as a craftsman screwdriver

a very cooperative section

shop vac attack!

victory! with all the tile removed you can see that before this fireplace was converted into a horrid green coal burning stove back in the 40's, it was just a arched brick fireplace. if the wood was removed the brick would run all the way up the wall. kinda cool.

mantle removal: 04.05.03 @ 9:00 am
so after discovering that there was about 7 inches of plaster behind the green tile we decided that it was necessary to build a better platform for the new tile to adhere to. this required the removal of the mantle (not part of the original plan). our friend bradley helped us out with this.

success!

this is what it looked like back there. we can now put in a better wall for the tile to grab hold of.

new tile installation: 04.11.03 @ 9:00 am

the new tile is placed

a marble backing wall was built for the new tile to adhere to

re-install of the mantle and paint is all that is left... for this project

viola! all better
