Vining Green Initiative

My step-by-step green journey journal

What

When rv dot com launched almost a decade ago, it was way ahead of its time. I was posting photo albums before the days of flickr. I was hacking out headlines long before the word blog was even invented. However, somewhere along the way, things became a little stale in here as the rest of the www world caught up with my act. While I was busy posting huge amounts of more of the same, several important web trends completely passed me by. So in response, and in an attempt to get back ahead of that curve and become relevant again on the web, I have decided to launch an ambitious project I've titled 'The Vining Green Initiative'.

From this point forward, it will be the mission of the VGI to introduce at least one 'green' thing per month that that the mid-town Vining family can do to help reduce its carbon footprint here on planet earth. An no, I'm not talking about simply turning down the thermostat and putting on a sweater for the winter, I'm talking about making some real life changes that will help save our planet and preserve the quality of life for future generations. Please join me in this effort and, as always, feel free to submit your ideas as to how I can make this VGI project a success.

Why
This part is a little more complicated. No, I didn't just wake up one morning and decided to go green. Nor do I like to think that I just succumbed to media influences and celebrity pressures. Instead, I think it was a combination of several things that sort of culminated this past Christmas when I actually had to break out my generator and blow through 7 gallons of gas a day just to help supplement power to my massive light display. In addition to the cost, it started me thinking a little about what I was doing to the environment in the name of Christmas cheer. I mean, frost wouldn't even form in my yard as a result of all the lights! So while my begonias and petunias were surviving longer than usual, things just didn't seem right and I decided to start making some changes.

The Project
Now right about now, I'm sure some of you are going 'dood, what's wrong with my monitor?' Well for your information, a black screen actually uses less power than a light one. No, I'm not trying to change the planet with just this one web page, but I do think that it is this sort of forward VGI thinking that will start the ball rolling down this preverbal green hill. Yes, it is at the expense of the award winning rv dot com look and feel you are accustomed to, but you'll get over it... it's green and it makes you a hater if you say anything negative about it. A convenient card I plan on playing and hiding behind frequently as this project progresses month to month. So suggest, contribute, and enjoy this green journey through 2009 along with me. It will not be easy, but I bet we can challenge some minds and make a difference.

You are just trying to save up for gas to power the 40 foot tree next year. Or maybe the animatronic trumpetting angel topper.

I am open to design submissions that reach 40 feet. I have some ideas, but most of them involve MORE WEIGHT which I'm not too sure is a good idea seeing how at 40 feet we might hit the house if it falls over.

This is an absolute farse, right? Right? RIGHT? The King of Konsumption? The Kaiser of Kombustion? The Emperor of Emissions... go green? NO WAY. I don't believe it. I thought you might do something more easily attained, like redesign your web site and incorporate some nice features like RSS. This. Ha. This will be entertaining indeed. I can't wait to read it... once you get RSS.

actually, RSS is on the menu, and yes, that should be easier than pulling this green thing off. I think you will be impressed and surprised. Just check in at the first of each month to see what green change I've rolled out. peace.

Is the tree amazing or what. I think we add an eco friendly ice skating rink next year. William can even reinact his NY proposal. Brilliant! This morning I went green and used organic cream in my coffee. I get it!
