Ice Nutrition Facts

Who Knew?

a week or so ago i was assigned to "ice duty" for this party kc and i were going to. rather than bring the home-made stuff, we decided to head to the corner gas station and pickup 3 bags (or 21 lbs) of ice there. FYI: they run about a buck 15 on the each.
now while they say "bag of ice" on the outside of the package, what they really mean is "block of ice wrapped in non hermetically sealed plastic".

anyway, i threw the bags into the back of the truck and motored on to the party. now as many of you may know, being put on "ice duty" doesn't merely involve pickup and delivery... it also includes installation.
i'm always amazed @ the rude guy who brings over several bags errr... blocks of ice and just puts them out on the patio like that is all his "ice duty" job entails. to me, that's like knocking the ball out of the park but only running to 3rd base. more considerate party goers cover all the bases by going fwd with the install process.

now i understand that etiquette is a new concept for many richardvining.com readers so let me go over the proper install procedure. first, pick up the ice blocks one at a time and smash them onto a hard surface. this surface should be OUTDOORS and preferably made of concrete. repeat this process until your block is virtually obliterated into little pieces. next pour the contents into a CLEAN receptacle. from there basically - rinse, lather, repeat, rinse, lather, repeat... you get the idea.
ok ok ok, so some of you may be going - "hey rich, this is fascinating and all but what does it have to do with nutrition?"

uhhh, up to this point... nothing, but it needed to be said. so lets move on.

while i was "installing" the ice for this last party, i saw something that i had never seen before.

in fact, it was sooo odd that i checked all 3 of my bags just to see if they all had it - and they did. NUTRITION FACTS! on a bag of ice! i was amazed yet excited.

this little plastic square was my key to being more even more fascinating at this evening's party. below is a typical conversation from that night.

RANDOM PARTY GOER: hi, my name is Dr. More Important Than You... how are you doing, where did you go to school, what do you do for a living, why are you here, where do you live, who do you know, blah blah blah.

ME: i'm richard, did you know that bags of ice have nutritional information on them?

by the end of the night most everyone who had attended the party was aware of not only the nutritional benefits of ice, but the dangers (see 1.0 mg of sodium) as well.
