Chili-n-Blankets for the Homeless

It's an Annual Event

Thanks to you, year 4 of Chili-n-Blankets was the biggest success yet. We raised $535 dollars and were able to buy 24 blankets, 48 pairs of socks, 120 bags of cheez-its, 12 sweatshirts and 70 lbs of chili. We had plenty of spoons and lids left over from last year and only had to buy a few cups... so each dollar went a little further this year. All told, we were able to make 100 cups of chili @ around 10 thick oz's each. A real meal!

this is what 70 lbs looks like. the brand name this time is "Cattle Drive Chili" and had a charming little story about cowboys, covered wagons, campfires and the wild west on the back of the can.

the back of the can also had a not so charming story about grams of "fat per serving"... 14!

jan brought by some bonus sweatshirts. she even washed them the night before so that they would smell good.

a friend of mine put us onto the idea of using these big pans. we bought 10 of them from costco for $4.99

you could heat up 15 lbs per pan

here is what the 24 packs look like. each pack contains the following

blanket
2 pair of socks
bag of cheez-its

once the chili was hot... it was assembly line time. kc scooped, i wiped, jan put on lids and ryan put them into the coolers.

i shot this from the back of the truck. Christmas day was beautiful, but a little chilly @ 10 am.

geddy went along for the ride

i got to meet these guys along union avenue. i made everyone look either ryan or myself in the eye and answer the question... "what day is it?"

everyone knew.

same street, just a little further down.

as you can see, the 12 oz cups were smokin' hot and all just about filled to the rim

this guy was my favorite... he and his buddy were deaf and could only sign language. fortunately jan was with us and knew some signs.

here he is saying "i love you" as we drive off.

All in all this was once again a huge success. Next year we will try and back off on the total tonnage of chili and buy more blankets instead... 70 lbs pretty much reaches the "all you can eat" level when you mix in all those chez-it's as well.

To close i'd like to share a story i heard from a lady we ran into @ Court Square. Her name is Carol and when she came up she looked somewhat familiar. As it turns out, Carol has been a part of the chili-n-blankets deal for a couple of years now and she went on and on about how thankful she was. What really got my attention was when Carol looked me right in the eye and desperately asked me to pray for her because she is "really going thru some tough issues in her life" right now. Deep down i was going "no kidding" but what i did was grab her hand and say "i will" - and i have, and if you helped with all this... so have you.

Thank you, Richard
